Some tourists at the home
Ghanaian arts writers visited ex-South African leader, Nelson Mandela’s home in Soweto to get acquainted with the history of the legendary leader.
Mandela’s home has become a major tourist destination, with hundreds of tourists visiting the home for the authentic history on the world’s most fam
ous ex-leader.
It is located in Orlando West, Soweto and is now called the Mandela Family Museum but simply referred to as the Mandela House. Nelson Mandela and his family called it their home from 1946 to the 1990s. Mandela lived in the house with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase, and after his divorce, with his second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Mandela himself did not spend much time at the Vilakazi Street home: his growing role in the anti-apartheid struggle drove him underground before his arrest in 1962. Madikizela-Mandela continued to live in the house with their two daughters, Zenani and Zindzi, until she was banished to the Free State Town of Brandfort in 1977.
Upon his release from Robben Island in 1990, Mandela moved back to the house for a short 11 days before moving to Houghton.
The four-bedroom home now houses various memorabilia, arts and crafts, honorary doctorates conferred on Mandela and picture collections of the Mandela family. A number of letters written by Mandela while he was in prison are also in the house. Its location is not far from Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s house on the same street.
The Ghanaian arts writers comprised Nii Korley of Graphic Showbiz, Martin Asiedu Dartey of Citi FM, Dela Aglanu of Myjoyonline.com, Caroline Sampson of YFM and Francis Addo of NEWS-ONE and DAILY GUIDE were in South Africa for this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and decided to visit the former leader’s home to learn more about him.
