Leila, Shirley, Ama K, Others For UK Awards










Two Ghanaian female directors, Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong Manso, have taken their supremacy in Ghana’s movie industry to the UK where their movies, ‘Sinking Sands’ and ‘Perfect Picture’ are set to win awards.
The two movies were nominated for the Favourite West African Film category of UK’s prestigious Screen Nation Awards scheduled for October 16 in London at the O2 Indigo. 
The award ceremony is one of UK’s finest which   has been at the forefront of acknowledging the best in Black British talent for over seven years.
Founded by renowned film producer Charles Thompson MBE, its primary aim is to acknowledge the achievements of those with the industry over the course of 12 months.
Hosted by husband and wife team Angellica Bell and Michael Underwood, the calibre of this year’s recipients promises to be exceptional.
In the past, it nominated and honoured top names as Horace Ove, Will Smith, Eamonn Walker, Spike Lee, Danny Glover, Floella Benjamin, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Rudolph Walker, Queen Latifah, Naomie Harris, Martina Laird, John Barnes, Don Gilet, Mark Norfolk, Wil Johnson, Kwame Kwei Armah, Pam Grier, Adam Deacon, John Akomfrah and a number of others.
Leila and Shirley’s movies are competing with movies ‘Ije’, ‘The Mirror Boy’, ‘Inale’ and ‘The Figurine’ from Nigeria.
Award-winning Ghanaian actresses Ama K Abebrese and Jackie Appiah were also nominated for Favourite West African Actress alongside Nollywood’s Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Mercy Johnson and Funke Akindele.
Screen bad boys Majid Michel and John Dumelo were also nominated for Favourite West African Actor. They are in the category with Nollywood giants Osita Iheme, Ramsey Nouah, Mike Ezuruonye and Hakeem Kae Kazim of ‘Pirate of Caribbean’ fame.
A number of Hollywood stars have been nominated for the event. Among them are Gabby Sidibe, Kimberley Elise, Monique, Paula Patton and Zoe Saldana who have been nominated for Favourite Female Screen Personality (US Film/TV).
The rest included Anthony Mackie, Denzel Washington, Hill Harper, Michael K. Williams and Tyler Perry who are also competing for Favourite Male Screen Personality (US Film/TV).
Other categories of the award include Favourite International Film (US), Favourite Male TV Star, Favourite Female TV Star and other special honors.

JJ Bunny’s High Budget Gambian Movie Hits Ghana

Actress JJ Bunny’s Gambian movie project titled ‘Groom’s Bride’, featuring some award-winning Gambian actors and Ghanaian lead actors Majid Michel and Jackie Appiah, will hit Ghanaian silver-screens this month.  The movie will be premiered at the Silverbird Cinema in Accra on June 29 via a grand red carpet ceremony, which is anticipated to bring visiting actors to town. The movie was directed by Frank Rajah for Abdul Salam’s Venus Film Production. The movie, shot last year, is Venus’ first movie in Gambia. Venus is yet to answer critics why the production was done in Gambia.   JJ Bunny came down from her Houston base last November for the movie in Ghana. After the movie, she travelled to Ghana. She has since remained in Africa as she has been bombarded with movie scripts. She has been described as a Nollywood US A-List actress residing in the United States.
