In
a bid to give back to society, award-winning Ghanaian costume designer Mabel
Germain has embarked on a rescue mission to help teenage mothers.
The
Mabel Germain Foundation will be providing
teen mothers with education, job training, healthcare and counseling as it
launches its programme, ‘Child With Child’ during the Easter celebrations.
“In
Ghana, one among five girls between the ages of 15 and 18 is pregnant or has
been pregnant at some point in time. Seventy percent (70%) of these teenagers
become mothers who are just not ready for motherhood.
“Some
of these mothers and their children are vey deprived, but it is also believed
behind every dark tunnel is a bright light, and that behind the poverty
stricken and deprived lifestyle of these young mothers, they still have skills,
talents and knowledge that can be taped for nation building,” Mabel Germain
told NEWS-ONE.
She
and her team will be putting smiles on the faces of these unfortunate teen moms
and their babies at the ‘Child With Child’ Easter gathering on April 1, 2013 at
the Mallam Atta Market at 2.00pm.
Among
activities will be registration of teen moms and counseling them on female
reproductive health by a team of doctors. There will also be a presentation of
donor products and clothes to the young mothers, as well as merry-making.
The
most important aspect of the ceremony will be a sod-cutting for a construction
of a daycare shed for children of teen moms.
Mabel
is a costume designer known for her exploits in Ghana’s movie industry. She won
two awards within a year. She won Best Wardrobe for ‘Sinking Sand’s at the Ghana Movie Awards in December 2011 and also
picked up the Best Costume Designer for Leila Djansi’s ‘I Sing Of A Well’ at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2011.
Mabel
started her career in 1986 as an actress in the film ‘Cobra Verde’, by German director Klaus Kinski. She subsequently
played roles in films like ‘Escape To
Love’, ‘Confessions’, and several others.
She
later decided to go behind the cameras because at that time, the technical
aspect of the film industry was more lucrative than acting.
She
later obtained a Diploma in Cosmetology and specialized in makeup artistry so
she branched into makeup. Her mum was also a fashion designer.
“So
when it comes to sewing and designing, it is part of me since childhood. So
when I branched into makeup and I realized that there is also another platform
to explore in costuming and wardrobe designing, I branched into that area as
well. That was how come I became a costume designer,” Mabel once told NEWS-ONE.
Her
first job as a wardrobe designer started with TV series ‘Sticking To the Promise’ in 2003, after which she did her first
costume job for ‘Golden Stool’,
followed by ‘Love Bird’. She has
since worked on a number of films including ‘Agony Of Christ’ by Venus Films, which she said “was a very
challenging job that I have ever done. After ‘Agony of Christ’ any job that I do looks little for me.”
Now
she is bent on giving back to the society that indirectly supported her career.
