AMAA Awards 2013 Nominations Out: ‘Yvonne Okoro's Contract Saves Ghana

The only Ghanaian movie that managed to get nominations for the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs) scheduled for Bayelsa State, Nigeria, next month is ‘The Contract’

For the Short Film Category, Ghana also bagged a nomination with ‘Kweku Ananse’.
 While actress Yvonne Okoro is Ghana’s only hope for the acting fraternity as she got nominated for Best Actress in Lead Role for the role she played in the movie, the movie’s director, Shirley Frimpong Manso, got nominated for Best Director.
Yvonne Okoro produced ‘The Contract’ and played a lead role in the movie. In all, ‘The Contract’ obtained 6 nominations in the following categories: ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Director’, ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Actress In A Leading Role’, ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Best Actor In A Leading Role’, ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Achievement In Screenplay’, ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Achievement In Editing’ and ‘AMAA 2013 Prize For Achievement In Production Design’.
 This year’s AMAA nominations list was released at a huge party in Malawi over the weekend, which was witnessed by a number of top African stars including Ghana’s Lydia Forson.  

This year, AMAA received a total of 671 films for consideration, including 184 short films, 108 Diaspora features – documentaries and shorts films, 60 documentaries from Africa and 319 feature films from within and outside Africa, including films made by Africans living abroad.
Yvonne Okoro and South African actor Hlomla Dandala were nominated in the ‘Best Actress In A Leading Role’ and Best Actor In A Leading Role’ respectively while Shirley Frimpong Manso was nominated in Best Director’ category alongside Niji Akanni (Hereos And Zeroes), David Kitounga (Nairobi Half Life), and Ntshavheni Wa Luruli (Elelwani).
Yvonne Okoro will be facing challenges from Florence Masebe (Elelwani), Mariam Ouedraogo (Moi Zaphira), Rita Dominic (The Meeting), Mbutung Seikeh (Ninah’s Diary) and Flora Suya (Last Fishing Boat).

JJ Bunny’s High Budget Gambian Movie Hits Ghana

Actress JJ Bunny’s Gambian movie project titled ‘Groom’s Bride’, featuring some award-winning Gambian actors and Ghanaian lead actors Majid Michel and Jackie Appiah, will hit Ghanaian silver-screens this month.  The movie will be premiered at the Silverbird Cinema in Accra on June 29 via a grand red carpet ceremony, which is anticipated to bring visiting actors to town.
