INFORMATION gathered by NEWS-ONE indicates that organizers of the annual Miss Ghana beauty pageant have not succeeded in getting sponsorship for the 2011 edition, therefore the contest would not be held this year.
With September almost ending, it seems time has run out for the organizers and even if they succeed in getting sponsorship, it would be a near impossibility to organize ten regional contests before organizing a national one by December.
“The 2010 event nearly did not come off because organizers were pulling out but we managed to put something together. But we have not been able to get sponsorship for this year. Honestly the companies are saying there is too much controversy about the event and it is affecting their credibility,” a source who is a key figure among the organizers told NEWS-ONE.
There are also talks that the company responsible for organizing the event, Media Whizz Kids, is handing over the project to another company, Exclusive Events Ghana and this has also affected the sponsorship for the event. The changeover is expected to be announced by the first week in October.
“Though there is an attempt to use the change over as an explanation for the cancellation of this year’s event, that cannot hold because this is not the first time another company is taking over, Shirley Frimpong Manso’s Sparrow Production held the franchise for five years or so yet and later returned it to us but it never affected the event so this cannot be true. Truth is we just do not have the money because as I told you, our sponsors are not enthused about the credibility of the event,” the source noted.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Karikari, Miss Ghana 2010 would still hold the position as Ghana’s foremost beauty queen until next year’s event.
Stephanie will leave Ghana on October 19 to represent Ghana at the 2011 Miss World Pageant in London, which is scheduled for November 6.
When she won, there was some controversy as critics said she was the least expected to have won that contest.
