STAR ACTRESS Yvonne Nelson says even though glaucoma is a hereditary ailment and her grandma died of it, she does not having the disease.
Yvonne said she takes frequent medical eye tests and is sure she does not have the disease though it hardly shows early symptoms.
The leggy actress made the revelation in an interaction with pupils and students of the Tema Parents and Specialist Angels Schools. She visited the school as part of preparations for her glaucoma essay competition.
The essay competition forms part of Yvonne’s strategy to intensify her campaign against glaucoma in Ghana.
Yvonne’s passion to educate people about glaucoma was inspired by her grandmother who died of the disease. After her grandmother’s death, Yvonne swore to take up the challenge to educate people on the disease.
She encouraged the school children to partake in the essay competition in which the main winner will win a two-week holiday trip to the UK, and other attractive prizes including laptops and a chance to work with her Glaucoma Foundation.
So far, a lot of children have registered to partake in the competition. Yvonne is due to visit other schools in Tema and Accra as well.
The actress has been leading a campaign against glaucoma since last October last year, after launching her Glaucoma Foundation. She recorded a song and video on glaucoma which featured stars John Dumelo, Majid Michel, Bola Ray, Sarkodie and a number of others.
The song picked up a prize at the Ghana Music Awards. Besides adopting a glaucoma victim to cater for his medical expenses, she also donated GH¢1000 to support the Glaucoma Association of Ghana Fund to help patients afford medication.
