On Wednesday September 14, 2011, Ghana’s entertainment industry was thrown into a state of mourning when the demise of top playwright and director of Ghana’s National Theatre, Efo Kodjo Mawugbe was reported.
He died on Tuesday September 13 evening about 11pm at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was hospitalized for almost six months.
He died of prostate cancer which had plagued him for some time now.
Before his untimely death, Efo Kodjo Mawugbe was the director of the National Theatre of Ghana and a permanent judge on Ghana's Most Beautiful reality show on TV3. He is also a member of the jury of Ghana Movie awards.
Efo Kodjo, who was born on April 21, 1954, left behind a beautiful wife and six children- three males and three females. Efo was renowned for his writing prowess in drama. He was the winner of the BBC's International Radio Playwriting Competition 2009, with his play ‘The Prison Graduates’. His play was selected out of 12,000 entries across the world.
